The second dorkbot event took place last weekend at the Pixelache festival in Kiasma. We did hae a change to present the HEM, home entertainment modular synthesizer ver 1.1, and we had an interesting demostration from AEE Turku chapter.
We had a nice evening with lots of new devices, nothing even cought on fire this time, even thought HEM:s spearers do smoke a little.

New Circuit Bending Techniques
There are a lot of different ways to approach the devices you´ve decided to circuit bend. Some people touch the pcb with their fingers to find new and intresting noises and then there are some people who use a little bit different techniques. Media attention
I just came back from TV1 program kirppis. Had a chance to demonstrate some of our equipment in a live show, and to talk alittle about experimenta electronics in general.
The show was not on the website, at least last time I checked, but shold be rerunned on tuesday.
The last TV show we were on TV2 Kamera kiertää is on-line, realmedia format, language finnish.

Hungarian Karaoke in Helsinki
Juho H'kk'nens and Kristian Smeds Hungarian Karaoke show has now reached our capital Helsinki. Show can be seen today and saturday in Kokotheater, showtime is at 19.00.

Dorkbot helsinki now operating
We had the first Dorkbot Helsinki event on sunday, and we had a change to present our artautomation project.

Wilson Laboratories TX-1200
Strange machine in a suitcase i found from fleamarket. It looked nice enough to buy and wasn´t expensive. It is a exerciser for 7- and 9-track magnetic tape transports. It came with some magnetic tape reel and original manual. We should start studying possibilities to use it in our work.

Our next iltama is dedicated to the first edition of Dorkbot Helsinki.
Dorkbot was first organized in NYC in 2000 as a monthly gathering of
artists,
scientists and anyone else "doing strange things with electricity". Later
on, other people realized that their home city was in dire need of such a
meeting, and dorkbot started to spread to other cities in different parts of
the world (www.dorkbot.org). The Dorkbot Helsinki event is hosted by Antti
Ahonen / The Association of Experimental Electronics (Kokeellisen
elektroniikan seura), with presentations by the Association of Experimental
Electronics and media artist & designer Tuomo Tämmenpää:
*Art and Automation: The Association of Experimental Electronics (AEE) will
introduce their new art-automation project, present some prototypes, and
tell about their future plans with these automation experiments. Art and
Automation is an on-going process started in 2006.
*Work in process, Ana-Digi bleeps and talking toys: Tuomo Tämmenpää will
give a short peekaboo of his ongoing experiments with electronics and toys
including: DIY analogue synthesizer gets punished by micro controlled
sequencer, early experiments with voiding some warranties with circuit
bending and talking toys that try to really understand each other while he
is trying to understand why he is doing all this.

The Association of experimental electronics is a group of people working
on the area of creative audio electronics. They tear apart old consumer
electronics and electronic waste, and turn them into sound-producing
devices. Their projects - including concerts, installations and workshops -
have been presented in various European countries.

Kokeellisen elektroniikan seura valmistaa ääntätuottavia koneita
elektroniikkajätteestä, ja esitteleen niitä erilaisten taiteenlajien
piirissä, usein myös taiteen ulkopuolella. Seura on tuottanut lukuisia
installaatioita, konsertteja, muita esityksiä sekä opettanut kokeellista
elektroniikkaa erilaisissa työpajoissa.

robotiikkaa, meillä ei olisi sitä materiaalista vaurautta josta me vielä
nautimme.
Yleensä taiteilijoiden oletetaan käsittelevän teemoja, jotka ovat
kulttuurille olennaisia, mutta jostain syystä automatiikkaa käsittelevää
taidetta, tai taideautomatiikkasovelluksia näkee hyvin harvoin. Futuristit
tekivät aikoinaan kokeiluja äänikoneiden kanssa, surrealistit
automaattikirjoituksen, ja Warholl taiteen liukuhihnatuotannon parissa,
mutta taiteen valtavirta on silti säilyttänyt vahvan "käsityön" leiman.
Taide on myös selvinnyt yllättävän hyvin yhteiskunnassamme muuten
vallallaolevan tehostamisen ja priorisoimisen keskellä. Samalla kun kaikilta
teollisuuden aloilta on karsittu suunnattomasti työpaikkoja, ja jopa
palvelusektorilla erilaiset automaatit valtaavat jatkuvasti uusia
sovellusalueita, taidemaailman sisällä status quo on säilynyt. Esimerkiksi
taidemaalarit maalaavat pääosin samoilla välineillä kuin aina.
Tavoitteenamme on nostaa vakavaa keskustelua taiteilijan roolista
teknistyneessä yhteiskunnassa: tarvitaanko nykymusiikin soittamiseen
muusikkoa, tai nykytaiteen tuottamiseen taiteilijaa? Onko taiteellinen
työskentely automatisoitavissa; jos on niin miksei sitä ole tehty, jos ei
ole niin mikä sen erottaa muista yhteiskunnan alueista?
Kokeellisen elektroniikan seura, johtava kokeellisen elektroniikan
marginaalitaidesovellusten tuottaja pohjoiseuroopassa, on nyt lähtenyt
tutkimaan taideautomaation mahdollisuuksia ja uhkia. Kyseessä on työnalla
oleva projekti, 7.1 esittelemme yleisölle niin projektiamme sen varhaisessa
vaiheessa, esittelemme joitain valmistamiamme prototyyppejä, sekä käymme
seuran historian kautta omaa kiinnostustamme taideautomatiota kohtaan.

Tuomo Tammenpää, born 1969, has a background in visual arts and design. He
works as a media artist and designer in Finland sharing his time between
practice-based research and development, art productions and commercial
design work. After ten years of work with interactive installations and
screen based design he has focused his work on exploring the potential of
physical and ubiquitous computing and tangible media in artistic and design
practice. Currently, Tuomo collaborates with an English game designer Daniel
Blackburn on electronically enhanced games and plays. They are interested in
combining the social and physical aspects from plays and board games with
the computational possibilities of micro controlled electronics. In his
artistic practice Tuomo is studying the use and misuse of everyday
electronic devices in the context of demystification and democratisation of
technology. Hacking, modifying, circuit-bending and reverse-engineering
provide the working context where he questions the relationship between the
electronic objects, the consumers and the objectives of consumer electronics
industry.

La braderie de l'art
We just came back from Robeaux, France. The consept of the event is to invite 100 artists from all over the world to robeaux for a busy weekend turning all kinds of recycled materials into art.
Time was 24hours, starting Saturday 19.00, ending Sunday 19.00. We were there all that time working on the materials the organizers had gathered for us, making and selling soundprodusing devices. For us the 24h timelimit was very challenging, because working with electronics is usyally much slower.
But we did get devices done, many of those sold and wi did have a great time. Hope we will be back there next year, because it is a great consept.

Today there is the premiere of hungarian karaoke show in theater Vanha Juko, Lahti. Association of experimental electronics provided the hungarian karaoke-suitcase for the show.

Kunt live
Kunt played yestarday at Kirja, great show. A bit more disco and less noise, reminds me of my favourite discoband Lolita storm.
They will do couple of gigs in Finland, Today in Lahti at Taidepanimo, and 28.11 Tampere at Telakka. So check them out.

Elcaset
Recently Harri found a flea market that sells elcasets and today i went to the same place and got some elcasets also. The Man said he has got some more of those and he will dig his storage and find them for us. Great, but now we are facing the problem we don't have a elcaset deck. Luckily all the remaining elcasets and 2000 decks where dumped to Finland in late 1979 - so there should be some el-decks around. That would mean that our new studio in vallila will have the elcaset high fidelity recording possibilities.
