Olohuone Turku

Next we will visit Turku at the Olohuone festival. Our piece is titled "Touch me" and it concists of our DIY musical instruments and a special touch sensitive mat where audience can play our instruments by touching each other

 We do not exactly know yet where we will be, but we will drop by at opening club on wednesday at Kirjakahvila.

After that we will be out there in the city somewhere every day till saturday. You can ask about our whereabouts from the infopoint, (formerly known as kulma 2011) at the Läntinen Rantakatu in the Kristiinankatu end. We will also be at the ending club at the Cafe Aula

Exhibition in Pori 29.4-20.5

Next we will be setting up our 101 Sequencers exhibition at Gallery 3H+K in Pori. This year we are celebrating our 10 th anniversary, so we will have a very special setup coming. 

We will build our most challenging setup ever, that will feature sequencers throughout our history, and a massive amount of completely new devices. 

At our opening on 28.4 we will also publish a book about our 10-year long journey, so be there and be sure to have some cash with you so you can own a copy of this beauty.

AAVE is hounting the northern suburbs of Helsinki, the AAVE-alternative audiovisual
event. Events will be held mostly in Malmitalo 12.-15.4.2012.

KOELSE will be performing on sunday 21.00. Be prepared for a very special audiovisual experience.

THE IRRESISTIBLE SHINE OF AAVE…

AAVE (in English: ghost, spectre) – will have its days of haunting 12. – 15.4.2012. Our festival of moving images will once again show a rich selection of different phenomena in audiovisual art, completely free of harge. From the coldness and darkness of the winter people are waking up to the rays of early spring, and walking towards the light that radiates across the small Malmi square. AAVE radiates. Polar Night is finally over. It is a time to join our hands together in our energetic gathering and wonder the mysteries of the moving images.

In this year our primary attention is on the live cinema performances and in the relationship between analogue film and digital media. We believe that this discussion has just started. We are glad to show works in Super 8-, 16-, 35 mm and digital formats.

To the delight of our audiences we will be bringing back our screening program of Japanese movie delicatessen, edge-of-the-art/ cutting edge art selections of both domestic and international media art and a historical program of the women animators from Soviet Union. Our new theme En Garde! will guarantee a sharp taste of the spiciness of the 21st century avant-garde. Our collaborators among others are AV-arkki, National Audiovisual Archive, FixC Cooperative and Impakt–festival, our soul sibling from Netherlands.

Our main venue is Malmitalo, but we will also haunt in Lasipalatsi exhibition space, XL Art Space, Finnish National Theatre Stage Club and Porvoonkatu bar. The lecture / panel discussion session between the structural film / film performance artist Guy Sherwin (GB) and media artist Oliver Whitehead (FI) is organized together in the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. In Malmitalo the media artist Markus Renvall (FI) will have a two day experimental chroma-key –video workshop for children of any age and their parents. Welcome to the shine of AAVE!

“How I learned to stop worrying and love trash”
The question of trash is very essential today, as the rate our limited natural resources is turning into hazardous waste is constantly accelerating. Will we drown in our own waste, or is there an answer to this question? If there is, should we search for it in technology, activism, philosophy, religion, history, art or somewhere else? Is the end of consumer-culture near, or will we be saved by singularity, green politics or our own actions?
Antti Ahonen from Koelse will tackle these topics, explaining how he learned to stop worrying and love trash.

Koelse documentary premiere

Long waited KOELSE documentary by Jari Kykkänen will be premiered this week.

The movie is about young men who form a group called the Association of Experimental Electronics (KOELSE). They gather electronic devices thrown away by people and build musical instruments and art installations from them. Their opinion of music, fun and the culture of consuming differs from the masses. What others see as a worthless piece of junk is valuable technology for them. Their whole idea is based on the idea of reusing this carbage. KOELSE is not really a band, it´s also not really an art community. It´s more like a way of life that relies on doing together and using the old technology again. Some setbacks

Ollis car burned down yesterday, destroying among other things 20 or so sequencers for our 101 sequencers project. So our demo-day today will not show 50.5 sequencers as we were planning, but we will present as many as we have.

So wellcome to our studio, today 19.30.

Maker faire helsinki?

Word is on the street that there are some plans for a "Maker faire" type of event in Helsinki. Behind the process are Altparty and Finnish Hacklabs, Pixelache will propably participate somehow and KOELSE as well. Hacklabs have a form you can fill if you want to participate, and Altparty will be having a planning meeting at Korjaamo restourants balcony on 4.2.2012 14-16 if you want to participate te arrangements. Thats all I know at the moment.

Next we build sequencers

2012 is a 10 year anniversary year for KOELSE. One of our anniversary projects is upcoming 101 sequencers exhibition in 3H+K gallery Pori 29.4-17.5. Our aim is to build 101 different sequencers and build a massive audiovisual entity out of them.

Saunamantra
Saunamantra on visuaalinen ääniteos, jonka ytimen muodostaa haapahirsistä rakennettu lyömäsoitin. Kolme lyömäsoittajaa tuottavat hirsisoittimella kudoksen, jonka kanssa muut muusikot kommunikoivat. Teoksessa on laajoja sävellettyjä jaksoja, mutta myös runsaasti tilaa improvisaatiolle. Musiikin lähtökohtana on käytetty vanhaa suomalaista saunalaulua, sekä seitsensävelistä asteikkoa jonka hirsisoittimen hirret soidessaan muodostavat. 
Saunamantrassa tutkitaan saunomiseen liittyvää rauhoittumista ja puhdistautumista musiikin, performanssin, sekä rituaalin keinoin.

Turku experiment

If you ever thought about going to Turku, now might be a good time. Next weekend there will be both Turku Modern and Ilmiö festivals happening there. Koelse will be participating both, for Turku Modern we will have a workshop from Thursday to Friday, concert on Friday and the workshop exhibition will be open on Saturday and Sunday at Titanik Gallery.

Join association of experimental electronics (www.koelse.org) on our next adventure in the world of abandoned consumer electronics. Bring anything that makes sound: radios, boom-boxes, sound-toys, keyboards or whatever you can find. Our team will guide you through the process of hacking and bending your thrash into something complitely new.

So browse your attic, check the flee-markets, dumpster-dive around or otherwise acquire sound-producing electronic devices and come to Vaihtolava. You can work all day (13-19) or just drop by and look around.

Panetone & Koelse at Ptarmigan

On Saturday 27.11 we are will be playing a special set at Ptarmigan. Our Brazilian guest Cristiano Rosa will be performing with his wonderfull set of circuitbend toys and DIY instruments. Cristianos show is titled Short lived like a butterfly.

“Short lived like a butterfly” – Performance

“Short lived like a butterfly” is an audiovisual performance that uses unique electronic instruments, delicate and unstable, built by the combination of assorted materials found at electronic debris, using Circuit Bending. These devices when played together generate electrical signals that reach a wide range of frequencies (from audible to ultrasonic). Depending on the combination of these signs, to locate its source is impossible because the space is filled with this mass of sound that resonates in our body. The instruments are unstable and sometimes they can simply stop, creating a constant risk during the presentation. All these malfunctions or glitches turn part of the improvisation.

KOELSE will warmup playing with a prototype of our selfs-sufficient performance platform.

And the nice people from Cristianos DIY together workshop will be playing something as well.

I am proud to announce, that very talented circuit-bender Cristiano Rosa will be visiting Helsinki next week. He will be first participating Piksel festival in Bergen Norway this weekend, and after that he will be heading to Helsinki.

Cristiano Rosa has been in the experimental music scene all around South America since 1989, and this is his first visit in Finland.

We will be having a workshop and a concert at Ptarmigan in Vallila. Workshop is unfortunately fully booked, but do not miss the concert on Sat 27.11 at the same place.

Koelse will be also playing there.

Art and sustainability workshop

Now it is time for you to get ready for our art and sustainability workshop. Workshop will be held at Ptarmigan Nilsiänkatu 10.

This workshop will be done in collaboration with MIMproject from Tallinn. MIM is currently working on a energy-neutral theaterpiece 2011, and KOELSE is working to make our expermental soundsystem energy self-sufficient.

In this workshop we join forces to give you an interesting insight on issues regarding art and sustainability. So join us for a a weekend filled with theoretical discussions and practical tinkering, when we think together how art should be made and try out in practice how to make it.

Koelse with defunensemble at siba

Tomorrow 25.11 there will be a very special show at Sibelius Academy. Defunensemble has invited us to play with them. Sami Klemola has Composed a short composition for a acoustic instruments defunensemble plays and experimental electronic instruments Koelse plays.

So it should be quite interesting mixture, and also the first (perhaps last also) opportunity to hear us in a big concert-hall.

After the concert there is also a panel discussion somehow related to subject.

Couple of years ago I got a call from Jori Hulkkonen. He had a problem, he was planning a symphony for 10 Roland TB-303:s, and he did not know how to sync those. 303:s do not have midi, but they do have older dinsync.

Jori did not want to use dindsync to midi or other commercial products, so we soldered together a custom buffered 1 to 10 dinsync box. 

Daniel made a nice set to flickr about the technical side.

So if you are going to see Kraftwerk in Suvilahti tomarrow, check the Acid Symphony as well.

I am setting up our artlab exhibition right now here in Vallila, took some testsamples with my laptop microphone, they are online here.

Almost ready

Our sequencer is now ready for the exhibition, we just need to install it to the space today, and connect with our other equipment.

This will be the first time we present our long waited master-sequencer project.

Some photos of our set with Desert planet at Pixelache club now online. We are also featuring on their new album, which should be in stores right about now.

Exhibition action

We will take part of an exhibition in a new artlabgallery starting 28.3. Gallery is situated Nilsiänkatu 10 a 2 floor (yes, just two floors below our headquarters).

We will be presenting a working prototype in our artautomation series, working title being electronic garden.

Kokeellista elektroniikkaa ja taidesalonki Artlab-galleriassa

Artlab esittäytyy II avajaiset pe 28.3. klo 18-20

Artlab-gallerian toinen näyttely jyrää voimallisilla maalauksilla, esittelee kokeellisen elektroniikan seuran Koelsen ja lanseeraa kaikille avoimen taidesalongin, josta löytyy töitä moneen makuun ja monesta lähteestä.

Artab-galleria on samalla taidelainaamo ja tehtaanmyymälä, jossa artlablaisten kuva- ja tekstiilitaidetta, bändien levyjä ja paljon muuta voi sekä hypistellä, kokeilla että ostaa omaan käyttöön. Taiteilijat työskentelevät samassa rakennuksessa ja niinpä työhuonevierailukin voi olla järjestettävissä.

Pixelache is coming

Pixelache festival is coming again, lots of interesting things this year. Biggest thing for AEE is of course our gig together with Desert Planet.

So this will mean a very strange mixture of videogametunes and experimental thrashelectronics. That will happend on friday club 14.3. at Korjaamo.

Do not miss the open hardware seminar on saturday either. 13-14.30 in Kiasma. David Cuartielles from Arduino and other interesting things.

We started a new project, we got a big set of old arcade mechanics from one auction. Now we will start building some sequencers from these.

AEE equipment has now made it´s first distribution deal. Our equipment can now be bought from Nordensköldinaukios Lippakioski, Helsinki.

Something a little bigger

Well now it is time to prepare for something a little bigger. We will be using this space, Merikaapelihalli, for our event 24.8.2007 (taiteiden yö. night of arts).

It is over 3000 square meters, so it is a bit of a challenge, but we are prepared.

new gigs

Association of experimental electronics is going to perform live on this saturday on lippakioski in Nordensköldinaukio (topeliuksenkatu).

Do not know any exact times yet, but propably around 18.00.

There will be something happening throught the day.

Factory gig

Did a bar gig for a change, at the trust old Factory Bar in Hakaniemi. Our set was a little more rhytmical this time, thamks to Harris and Villes new sequencers (finished the same day the gig was).

AEE live at Factory Bar 15.6

Association of experimental electronics will do a live gig in notorious Factory Bar in Helsinki. It will be a memorable night, beside us there will be a punkrock band Rankkuri and Arteria will play some deathmetal.

Well so there will be a little something for everyone, so see you all on friday at the Factory bar, Siltasaarenkatu 3-5.

AEE on M2HZ

Association of experimental electronics is producing a series of TV programs for a new finnish public access tv project M2HZ.

Test broadcast is going on right now, our first show will be on tomarrow, thu 17.5.2007.

APC space wired 1.0

Last night i fitted space wired APC inside a Osram Centra bulb (diameter 80mm and length 160mm).

It's controlled whit two LDR's they need to be at very dark to start oscillating at audio frequency, so it's kind of optimised for gigs at dark places. It has also microphone stand adapter.

Second dorkbot event

The second dorkbot event took place last weekend at the Pixelache festival in Kiasma. We did hae a change to present the HEM, home entertainment modular synthesizer ver 1.1, and we had an interesting demostration from AEE Turku chapter.

We had a nice evening with lots of new devices, nothing even cought on fire this time, even thought HEM:s spearers do smoke a little.
